Order Flow vs Dark Pool: What's the Difference?
Many assume order flow and dark pool are the same thing — they are two sides of the same money: one from the lit market, one from off-exchange. Read together for the full picture.
The one-line difference
Order flow looks at the lit market (public exchanges), split by order size into institutional vs retail. Dark pool looks at off-exchange (ATS / TRF) block trades.
Side by side
- Venue: order flow = lit market; dark pool = off-exchange.
- Granularity: order flow = by order-size tier; dark pool = blocks / net amounts.
- Timing: lit is near real-time; dark is mostly disclosed after execution.
Why read them together
- Lit buy + dark sell — contradictory; a common distribution feature.
- Lit sell + dark buy — dark-side absorption; not necessarily weak.
- Both buy / both sell — higher signal consistency.
Example (data only): "Institutional net sell −$6M on the lit market, dark pool net buy +$9M" — selling visibly while absorbing in the dark is an absorption-type feature that needs price confirmation.
Common mistakes
- Looking only at lit-market flow and ignoring the dark pool.
- Looking only at the dark pool without checking its direction vs the lit market.
- Treating them as the same data and double-counting.
