Dark Pool vs Lit Market: What's the Difference?

When buying and selling the same stock, the dark pool and the lit market differ completely in trading venue, disclosure method, and price impact. Only by understanding these two can you avoid treating "dark pool net buying" directly as "bullish."

Three Comparison Dimensions

① Volume Share

The dark pool's share of total volume is the first indicator for judging "institutional participation." A rising share usually means institutions are trading off-exchange; a falling share means trading is returning to the public market.

② Buy/Sell Direction

The dark pool's net amount (buy − sell) reflects the bias of off-exchange capital. But note: dark pool "buying" does not equal "actively bullish"—it may simply be passive absorption or market-making inventory adjustment.

③ Relationship with Price

Net buying in the lit market is usually accompanied by rising prices; net buying in the dark pooldoes not necessarilymove the price. If "lit market selling, dark pool buying" persists, the common interpretation is that "some capital is absorbing off-exchange," but continuity needs to be verified.

When to Look at the Dark Pool and When to Look at the Lit Market

Lit selling + dark buyingOff-exchange absorption, need to watch continuity
Lit buying + dark sellingDirectional conflict, watch for distribution risk

Stacked on top ofShort-selling ratio (SVR)andOptions P/C Ratio: High SVR and low P/C indicate that "spot is suppressed by short selling, but options lean bullish" — such divergence often appears before events.
